From Shapes to Words.

This project portrays the process that led to the development of compositions that were obtained by modifying elements such as position, direction, dimension, and tint in order to create implied movement and dynamism in two-dimensional designs.
THE PROCESS

The first step of the process was to create symmetrical and asymmetrical shapes composed of six dots. Each shape was then inserted into a panel and repeated three times in order to create rhythm.

The first compositions (left-hand side) depict three identical figures distanced from each following the principles of symmetry, asymmetry, and randomness. Next to those, the previously-created shapes touch in order to create new patterns.

The result of this step was indeed to generate not only four symmetrical and asymmetrical designs but also four new configurations attained by using mixed arrangements of figures. The latter were thereafter substituted with arrows. The arrows were used in order to highlight the direction of the dot-compositions which led the eye to wander around the square, and therefore, create implied movement.

The second step was to convert those arrows into circles. The given circles were varying in size: large, medium, and small. Each arrow had to be substituted into a new shape made out of two circles. Afterward, there were conducted some studies on how the different pairs of circles might interact with each other in different scenarios: one circle inside of the other, overlapping circles, touching circles, and mixed combinations of circles.
The next level was to add tonal value firstly to those new couples (100%, 75%, 50%,
25%, 0%), and to the background as well.

By doing this exercise, it was not only important to create a hierarchy among the circles
by adding different tints but also to distinguish which shapes were in the foreground, middle ground, and background depending on the tints used.
The circle-pairs were then replaced by letters that had to create a six-lettered word. The word that was chosen for this design is “reduce”, and the typeface is Gill Sans.
As you can see, the each letter of the word is not only generating movement, but also reducing in weight.
